At Thredgards we are committed to reducing our carbon footprint and minimising our impact on the environment. One very important way that we do this is by using UBQ – a plastic substitute made from unsorted household waste.

UBQ is made from waste material that is usually non recyclable and would normally be left in landfill or incinerated. This could be anything from used diapers to banana peels. If left in landfill, this waste would create toxic fumes that are harmful to our planet. But, by using UBQ, this waste is instead recycled and made into new plastic products. UBQ is made from 100% recycled material.

landfill

“Every ton of UBQ™ replaces 1 ton of oil-based plastic, diverts 1.3 tons of waste from landfill and incineration, and prevents up to 11.7 tons of CO2eq.”

UBQ uses much less energy to create than traditional plastic and does not use fossil fuels. Because it’s made from waste, UBQ removes more carbon from the atmosphere than its production creates. This means UBQ is a climate-positive material as it has a carbon footprint of -1.02!

When we mix approximately 4% of UBQ with reprocessed material or 25% with virgin material we manufacture a carbon neutral material product. We are currently working on a project to manufacture our Push in Flange Protectors in carbon neutral material.

There are lots of other ways we try to look after the planet at Thredgards. Please see our environment page to read more.
